Festivals in Ukraine


Kiev International Film Festival MOLODIST (YOUTH) is one of the most prominent festivals in Europe specialized in cinematic debuts and students’films. First organized in 1970 year, it is conducted annually on the last Sunday in October since then.
The presently acknowledged European film producers Fled Kelemen, Tom Tickver, Denny Boyle, Olexiy Balabanov, Jacques Odiar, Francois Ozone, Stiven Doldri, Sergiy Masloboischykov, and a lot of others made their first appearance at the Molodist film fest.
Among the participants of the 90s there are award winners of the most prestigious movie prizes of the world: Bruno Dumond, who in 1997 came out in Kyiv with his La Vie de Jesus, took Palme d’Or two years later for his second production L'Humanite; Alen Berliner marked at the MOLODIST for the best full-length film La Mia Vita in Rosa was to became the Oscar laureate.
Nowadays, the festival presents close to 240 films from over fourty countries annually.
The competition schedule is divided into sections of the student films, first professional short film (fiction, animated, or documentary), and first professional full-length film. Within the frames of the non-competition program the most remarkable achievements are shown of the newest national and worldwide motion pictures, as well as retrospective demonstrations dedicated to the leading film producers and major movie schools.

The KROK Animated Film Festival is the only animated film festival in the CIS rated in the world as the one of the best on the planet. Originated in 1989, the festival is held annually by turns in Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine’s president of the festival is David Cherkasky, the author of such famous animated cartoon serials as Captain Vrungel’s Adventures, Doctor Aibolit, and Treasure Island. The KROK festival is not only the show of the best-animated films; it is also fascinating workshops, improvised concerts, incessant meeting with the audience and non-stop joy of communication.

The International Theatrical Festival ARTISTIC BEREZILLIA is a unique creative laboratory of authorial drama art. Established in 1992, the festival became the original dedication to Les’ Kurbas, founder of the Ukrainian modernist theater of the 20th century. The National Union of Actors of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Arts stand out as the cofounders of the festival.

The International Theatrical Festival Golden Lion is conducted in Lviv every second year starting in 1989, and is a member of the European theater forum IETM and association of international festivals IFEA. By its creation, the festival owes to the National Union of Actors of Ukraine, especially its Lviv office, the Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and Arts, Lviv regional and municipal state administrations, as well as the city’s Voskresinia (Revival) theatre.

The All-Ukrainian Youth Festival Perlyny Sezony (Pearls of the Season) is carried out by the same name artistic center supported by the youth organizations, government organs and interested commercial organizations annually and involves all the regions of Ukraine with free participation (with no fee for payable).
The purpose of the festival is the search and assistance for the gifted youth, and creating conditions for its self-actualization, as well as developing of new lines in the Ukrainian modern art.

International Festival TAVRIA GAMES, the festival of music and beauty, is held since 1992. On the festival stage at the town of Kakhovka in the Kherson oblast perform the best representatives of the domestic musical culture as well as genuine stars of the global scale. Within the frames of the festival sports contests are held such as the kid’s soccer tournament Leather Ball revived by the Games, Tavria sailing boat racing, and mini-Olympics among the disabled people. Also occur the all-Ukrainian prize in music and mass-shows Golden Zhar-Ptytsia (firebird) decoration ceremony, the Beauty Queen of Ukraine contest, the Golden Barrel beer test of endurance and the enormous musical presentation.
International Youth Festival Tchaika (Sea Gull) founded in Kiev in 2001 to be held within the frames of the celebrations marking the Day of Kyiv. It is one of the most popular open-air festivals of modern music attracting masses of spectators.

The festival of young performers Chervona Ruta (Red rue), has originated in Chernivtsi in 1989. One of the pioneering in Ukraine, it is moving since then throughout the country with no place stay permanently. During the time elapsed a great number of both individual performers and groups playing in various styles and genres started their scenic life here. The festival is a biennial event ending with a gala-concert of winners.

Competition for Young Pianists in Commemoration of Volodymyr Gorovets
Organized on the basis of the Reinhold Glier Kyiv State musical school to honor the 90th anniversary of the pianist who glorified his native town.

Serge Lyfar International Ballet Competition was founded in 1994 and is traditionally held under the auspices of the UNESCO. The Ministry of Culture and Arts, National Opera of Ukraine and Ukrainian Academy of Dancing are among the cofounders of the festival. The competition is included to the registry of the most prestigious international choreographic events.
