Mass Media of Ukraine

The number of registered and re-registered mass-media in Ukraine, most of all in print, is growing dynamically. The elimination of state monopoly on information, which was the main goal at the beginning of the 1990-s, has been successfully completed.

Considerable progress has been made in integrating our country into the world’s information field.  The Ukrainian government has been working with experts from the European Council as well as other international institutions to ensure the freedom of speech and activity of mass media in Ukraine. Such cooperation is fruitful for both parties, as our Government has the opportunity to use the extensive European experience in this sphere while the European community can objectively research the situation with the freedom of speech in Ukraine.

The Parliament of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada, is actively working on legislation in the information field, taking steps towards bringing it into accord with the requirements of international law. For instance, work has begun on the Information code of Ukraine; a draft of the new version of the Law of Ukraine “On Information” has been prepared within its framework. The work continues on the draft of the Law of Ukraine “On Mass Media” and other laws in this sphere.

By January, 1st, 2004, 19351 printed mass media has been registered, 8248 of them being issued nationwide, regionally and/or abroad (1446 more than in 2003) and 11103 – locally (1351 more than in 2003).

The language situation in printed Ukrainian mass media reflects the ethnical complexity of Ukrainian society: 3864 of them use exclusively Ukrainian, 2567 – Russian, 9 – Hungarian, 2 – Bulgarian, 3-3 Polish, 6 – Romanian, 28 – English, 3- German, 2 – Chinese, 4 are read by the Crimean Tatars in their native language.

Presently  1096 broadcasting companies operate in Ukraine, only 30 of them being state-owned (3% of the total number).

The country also has a wide network of information agencies, their number totaling 99.
